  President's Message
Dr. Mary Ergen

Lots of people resolve to get into shape for the New Year.  That is what TVMA is going to do.  Last year was a transition year to new management with Deloris Green and now the groundwork has been laid.  We will build on that foundation and become a stronger and a more member-friendly organization. The complaint I heard most often last year was that members did not know what was going on in the association. This year, we will communicate not only by timely newsletters, but also we have a new website established that will be an important way for the Executive Board to communicate with the membership. Legislative Action Center
The TVMA offers an online advocacy tool, Capwiz-XC, that allows us to keep you up-to-date on key legislative issues and provide a quick and simple way for you to stay in contact with your lawmakers.  Click here to link to the TVMA Legislative Action Center.

Legislative Relations Survey
If you have a relationship with one or more of the members of the Tennessee General Assembly, Governor, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressmen or key staff, please click here to complete our survey.  By providing us with this information, it allows us to be more effective with contacts to legislators who have significant influence on laws, rules and regulations affecting the veterinary profession.

Dorothy Kirsch of Memphis was honored as the recipient of the 2008 Dr. John C. New Human-Animal Bond Award.  This award is given to a person who has tirelessly promoted the well-being of people by the responsible interaction of people and animals.  As a dedicated volunteer of the Memphis Zoo, Mrs. Kirsch is a perfect example of the criteria for this award.  Dr Chuck Halford presented Mrs Kirsch with the award.

The Companion Animal category honors animals who have provided a benefit to their human companions or their community.  This year the award was given posthumously to “Champ” in recognition of his outstanding companionship while teaching truth about unconditional love.

Professional award
Ajax

The Professional category honors specially trained assistance animals.  This year, the Professional award goes to “Ajax” for his dedicated service to the community, exemplifying professionalism by bravery, compassion, and excellence in the line of duty as a member of the Memphis Canine Police Unit. He is pictured here with his partner Officer Paul Keating.

Hero Award
Garbo Hanks

The Hero category honors animals who have saved or preserved human life. This year the Hero award goes to "Garbo" who has saved the life of her owner, Gracie Hanks who is a diabetic, by detecting changes in her blood sugar level.  The goodwill, loyalty and bravery of these fine animals have earned them induction into the Tennessee Animal Hall of Fame. The award was presented to Gracie and Garbo by Dr. Bo Crabtree.

The Tennessee Human/Animal Bond Foundation exists to celebrate, embrace, and encourage understanding of the special roles animals play in our lives.  THABF supports programs such as the Tennessee Animal Hall of Fame, which honors specific animals for their contributions to humans, and educational programs highlighting the importance of animals and veterinary medicine
